Summer may be over but this bumble bee is still feeding on the sunflowers at the bottom of the garden.

Sunflower Seedlings

The sunflowers sowed at the bottom of the garden are doing well and are already little seedlings as you can see from the picture above. I wonder how tall the tallest one will grow this year..?

Brussels Sprout

Brussels Sprouts are my most favourite vegetable and today when in Tal Goed Nursery near Glan Conwy I spotted some little plants so have purchased some and planted out this evening. I can't wait until the Autumn/ Winter time to be able to say that I have eaten Brussels sprouts from the garden. Wouldn't it be nice to have my own home grown Brussels sprouts Christmas Day!

I have also replaced the hanging basket with a fern plant which looks effective and will hopefully be low maintenance, weeded the border, planted out the horse chestnut seedling into a pot (the one that was growing in the "wild" part of the border), and sowed some sunflower seeds onto the border at the bottom of the garden.

Sunflowers

The sunflower plants have done extremely well in the small patch of ground just beyond the fence at the bottom of the garden. It has the sun practically all day and most of them are ready to flower. I can't wait to see them. I am sure there will be many an insect attracted to them! 

Sunflower Names

I have planted three types of sunflower seed this year with the hope of growing them just beyond the fence at the bottom of the garden where the bindweed used to be. These are the varieties I have planted:

Harlequin F1 hybrid
Velvet Queen
Earth Walker

I am looking forward to seeing these in flower early in the summer. The seedlings are already doing well in the compost pots on the patio. I have two worries about where I am planting them... one being that the bindweed may get it's clutches on them and kill them and the other being that the school children who frequently 'hang' around outside the garden may pick them! We will see.

Sunflowers Summer 2005

These are two close up pictures of a couple of the sunflowers which grew in pots last summer. Sunflowers are my favourite flower. They are so bright and cheery and attract lots of wildlife throughout their life cycle. You will probably see many pictures of sunflowers on this blog!

These are pots of various herbs on the steps up to the back door of the house. I think they are Oregano, Mint, Thyme, and Parsley from left to right.
